Ecological, cultural and prehistoric itineraries.
The San Vito coast between rocks, creeks and beaches.
ECOLOGICAL ITINERARIES
From San Vito Lo Capo to the Zingaro reserve.
It
is better to go there by boat so that you can admire the Tonnara, the
Firriato, Punta Tannure, Lago di Venere, a piece of the coast with
islets that look like little cliffs and are mirrored in the sea. You
will then appreciate the difference between the mounts, the
Mediterranean bush and the sea. Then you will arrive in the heart of the
Zingaro reserve that is so praised by the tourists for the beautiful
colours of the sea and the beaches. The itinerary ends with islets and
the Tonnara di Scodello. You may also drive up to the entrance of the
reserve located at 6 km from San Vito Lo Capo. Then, for those who like
trekking, you may walk for about 12 km. However, you may easily go round
the Zingaro reserve no matter what your physical conditions.
From San Vito Lo Capo to the Monte Cofano
reserve, 10 km.
San
Vito Lo Capo, in the direction of Trapani to the Cofano tower. For about
7 km the landscape is of a rare beauty with lovely little creeks (cala
Isulidda), beaches (such as cala dell’Arena and Calaza) and the Ciottoli
bay (cale del Tono).
The itinerary drives you up to the Monte Cofano reserve and it is the
ideal place to practice trekking and mountain bike.
From San Vito Lo
Capo to the Mancina bay, 3 km.
The
ideal itinerary to practice trekking and mountain bike since it is
entirely flat.
The bay of Mancina, Topata, Rossa and the cliff. Distance from San Vito:
2 to 3 km. Follow the road down to the harbour, drive out on the
panoramic road and follow on the road along the coast.
Monte Monaco itinerary
Climb
up the Monte Monaco, 600 meters high, and you will discover a typical
landscape with carob trees, pistachio trees and palm trees. Distance
from San Vito up to the top: 8 km. Ideal for trekking, or more easily in
jeep. From the top, you can view the entire bay of San Vito Lo Capo.
ITINERAIRES CULTURELS
The sanctuary of martyred San Vito and the Santa Crescenzia chapel
The
sanctuary is a former fortress. It is devoted to San Vito, a martyred
Christian who ran away with his servant Modesto and his nurse Crescenzia
during the persecution. The chapel that is located on the provincial
road is devoted to San Vito. From the former chapel of San Vito, there
is still the apse containing the statue of San Vito and that is
attributed to Gagini.
The guard towers
There
are a number of five towers built in 1584 to protect the coast and that
were designed by the architect Camillo Camilliani. They are located
between Calampiso and Cofano. Close to the harbour, the Torrazzo, with
its round structure that is totally different from the other towers, is
one of the symbols from the Arab civilization.
The Tonnara del Secco
The
Tonnara del Secco is a huge edifice that was still under activity by the
end of the 70’s to fish and prepare tuna fish. It is located at 2 km
from San Vito: in the direction of the Zingaro reserve, at 1.5 km follow
the road to la Tonnara.
The lighthouse
The
lighthouse is located on the extreme point of the cape San Vito. It is
the highest lighthouse, with 40 meters high and three powerful lights
that can be seen at a distance of 20 miles.
PREHISTORIC ITINERARIES
A
great number of caves are hidden in the limestone mounts, to the East
(Grotta Capreria, Grotta dei Ciaraveddi) and to the West (Grotta
Racchio, Grotta Calamancina, Grotta dell’ Isulidda, Grotta Perciata).
There are some engravings and paintings in most of them.
UNDERWATER
ITINERARIES
There
are quite a number of caves (dei Gamberi, dell’Acqua Dolce, Perciata,
dell’Arco… etc.), either above the surface of the water, or underwater
(Parete di Calampiso, della Tonnara, del Firriato, Monte Cofano… etc.).
There are also gorgeous shallows (Faro, Cala Rossa, Catarratte,
Scialando) and two wrecked ships: the Kent (near the Tonnara of San Vito
Lo Capo) and the Capua (near the Tonnara of Scodello).
